Detention and evidence
Russian authorities detained a teenager suspected of planning an attack at Moscow's Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve after receiving information from the United States, Al Jazeera reported, citing Interfax and the Federal Security Service (FSB). The suspect is a Russian citizen and has not been identified.
According to the FSB, the teen posted photos on TikTok wearing a balaclava and tactical clothing while holding what appeared to be an automatic weapon, and shared images taken at the park captioned 'I found a place.' A search of the suspect's home reportedly uncovered the clothing and accessories from the photos, and the phone showed searches related to terrorist attacks and mass killings and a subscription to a neo-Nazi Telegram channel, Interfax reported.
US warning and park closure
The detention followed a US embassy security alert on Saturday warning of a 'credible threat of a mass casualty event' at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve in southern Moscow, a popular palace and park complex. The embassy urged people to avoid the area and said the US government was coordinating with Russian authorities. The park was temporarily closed on Saturday following the warning.
The FSB said it was grateful to the American side for providing the information, according to Al Jazeera.
Next steps
Russia's Investigative Committee is considering what legal action to take against the suspect, the FSB said. The report notes that Washington has previously warned Moscow about potential attacks, including in March 2024, weeks before an ISIL-affiliated attack on a Moscow concert hall that killed more than 140 people.
