What the appeal court decided

Al Jazeera reports that the Bucharest Court of Appeal ruled on Wednesday to keep Calin Georgescu in police custody, adding 30 days to his pre-trial detention and setting it until November 27. The decision reversed an October 13 order by a lower court that would have moved him to house arrest for 30 days while the fraud investigation continued.

Georgescu, a far-right politician and former frontrunner in Romania's cancelled 2024 presidential election, remained in custody after the ruling, according to the report.

The fraud allegations

Prosecutors allege that Georgescu and two other suspects persuaded a Romanian businessman to hand over 1.1 million euros. According to the prosecution account cited by Al Jazeera, the businessman was led to believe the suspects could help him secure a credit line of up to 15 million euros from a foreign financial institution.

Georgescu has denied any wrongdoing and has said the investigations against him are politically motivated. Al Jazeera also reports a separate case in which prosecutors accused him of instigating violence after the ballot was annulled, disseminating false information, attempting to disrupt national security and promoting 1930s fascist leaders.

Protests and political context

Hundreds of Georgescu supporters protested against the investigation, and media reports cited by Al Jazeera said groups entered the Bucharest court building on Wednesday to demand his release. George Simion, leader of the hard-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians, said the initial lower-court ruling showed protesters were being heard.

The former candidate won the most votes in the first round of Romania's November 2024 presidential election. The results and second round were scrapped after allegations of Russian interference, which Moscow denied. Georgescu was later barred from standing again, and Nicusor Dan won the rerun in May 2025. This month parliament approved a government led by Prime Minister Luca Niculescu.
